For a client i needed to investigate S3 storage for a drupal media site. A 30 minutes job i figured.
Basically i just needed to see how to install it, check if all drivers were installed and check how we should configure it for the site they needed.
After 3 hours of 'working' i still hadn't configured anything although i worked very hard.
Read on to know what happened...
1. Task: Configure s3 for client
Thought : I guess i will need the drupal media_mover module to do that and i guess i also want to know something about the internal kitchen of the module.
1.1 Task: Install eclipse PDT, and get the Web Debugging working
Google search, PDT All in one ...
Thought : Since i have tried several times to get that Zend Debugging working in PDT, and i guess i'm not the only one. Let's blog about the process.
1.1.1 Task: Blog about install PDT Eclipse to do Drupal debugging.
Thought: I want this blog to look nice, and will encapsulate some images and maybe screencasts, so lets's use a wysiwyg-blog-tool
1.1.1.1 Task : Install ScribeFire extension for Firefox
1.1.1.1 Done
1.1.2. Task: Follow the instruction on http://divby0.blogspot.com/2007/08/pdt-php-debugging-w-zend.html Download, Unpack ...
Thought.. Shouldn't it be more instructive i i use Screencasts iso plain text/images. It would also be 'faster'
Task 1.1.2.1 Google Ubuntu create screencasts.
http://screencasts.ubuntu.com/Creating_Screencasts
Install xvidcap, some extra's ....
Thought.. This guy has a neat idea, always run the screencasts withing a VM, to be sure you don't miss any hidden dependencies..
1.1.2.1.1 Task : Run Ubuntu Feisty inside VM.
Try to get Qemu going, [installation halts after 2 minutes]
Try to get Virtual Box running [when launching a VM, my HOST machine locks completely, restart needed - Try it again after restart... hmmm. it is reproducable, restart again]
Try to get VMWare player + get an vmdk+vmx image from ... .. Damn.. this image is for a newer version of vmware [i've installed v1.0.2]..
1.1.2.1.1.1 Task : Figure out how to install vmware-player v.2.0
Unsuccesfull.
1.1.2.1.1.2. Task Run ubuntu desktop feisty in vm
Find another feisty desktop image that i didn't need to install.. found it at.. hmm.. NO desktop, let's use the server and that later on do an apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
Bittorrent that server..zip, unpack, start the vm.. Nice this one runs ok,
Start up, login, sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop..
Wait 10 minutes.. Those VM's are indeed not as fast as my host machine...
Blank screen... DAMN.. Click the screen, press Enter, ... aha.. apparantely it was waiting for some response. I don't know what i've selected, My screen was garbled up, but it had to do with the screen-resolution..
Waiting a bit longer... And finally it started doing stuff.
By than it was bedtime.
sudo shutdown -r now...
It really did feel like if done a lot of work today.
Let's recapitulate.
- Installed Eclipse
- Installed PDT
- Installed Scribefire
- Installed Xvidcap
- Installed QEmu
- Installed VMwarePlayer
- Installed Feisty within VM

Hope that helps.

I have to guard myself for this not to happen. To be alert for what was my initial intention, ... and not to wander around.
But hé, sometimes this is a great escape ;-)
